Counter strike is a multiplayer first-person shooter video game developed by Valve Corporation. It is the stand-alone remake of Half-Life: Enhanced Edition, and its expansions Counter Strike: Condition Zero, Counter Strike: Source, and Counter Strike Online. The game was originally released on Microsoft Windows in . To date, it has been ported to OS X and Linux in addition to all of the aforementioned operating systems Over the course of its lifetime it has had 14 releases on numerous platforms and an additional 8 games in development. As part of updates for versions 1.1 through 1.4 players were able to create user levels which allowed anyone with an internet connection to download custom maps without having to buy or find a copy of the game. The game was included in the Steam Bundle #2, which sold over one million copies, and "Counter-Strike" became one of the most popular games ever released on Valve's software platform. It has also spawned an award-winning series of video games, films, novels, comic books and tours by partner companies. "Counter-Strike" is estimated to have earned over $100 million in revenue since 2000. On August 21, 2006, Valve announced that it had ceased development on the game as it was no longer profitable (i.e. was not paying for itself). Valve stated that the game would be discontinued on or before September 15, 2006. Valve co-founder Gabe Newell later clarified that they were looking to cease full development on the game, but would continue to update and service the game for as long as their customers continued to support it. On October 28, 2012, Valve released an "Insurgency" update which was intended to be included in "CS2", called "Operation Bloodhound" which added over 50 community created maps and additional content. However, the new content was not incorporated into previous versions of "Counter-Strike", so these new items are only accessible on the newer versions of the game. Counter-Strike was the first game developed by Valve, following their earlier game "Doom", that was made free of charge. "Doom"s developer, Id Software, had underwritten the initial costs of developing the game. Newell said in 2000 that this was "just not a sustainable situation". "Counter-Strike" has six maps used by the fictional terrorist organization Global Security, which is dedicated to eradicating all forms of violent terrorism. The Valves later created two more maps for each group they created. Each map features areas where players can buy weapons and ammunition with money that is earned through gameplay or provided as a reward for achieving missions or objectives. For example, players can buy armor to protect themselves from further damage. If a player's health is completely depleted, he or she will die and respawn at the beginning of the round. If a player holding a hostage is killed by an opponent, the hostage will be freed and will drop a coupon which other players can pick up to redeem a new uniform for free. Players receive an in-game uniform upon their first death without one. Player models are composed of four interchangeable parts: uniform, helmet/mask, gloves/gauntlets and boots/leg armor.
